Moosehead Shipwrecks: Documentary Film
Ryan Robbins, an Undersea customer, became fascinated with Moosehead Lake’s shipwrecks and the history behind them. His exploration caught the attention of Liz McKeil, who also grew up on the lake and is executive director of the Moosehead Marine Museum in Greenville. Now the two of them, with help from the Moosehead Historical Society, other divers and a wide range of locals, are beginning work on a documentary film and oral history project called “Sunken Steamboats of Moosehead Lake.”

For those of you who do not know DAN…
Divers Alert Network is Your Dive Safety Association
Divers Alert Network
DAN is Divers Alert Network, the diving industry’s largest association dedicated to scuba diving safety. Serving scuba divers for more than 30 years, DAN provides emergency assistance, medical information resources, educational opportunities and more. Whether you are just learning how to scuba dive or are a veteran of the sport, DAN has a great deal to offer you.
Dive Accident Insurance
DAN is supported by membership dues and dive accident insurance. Through its nonprofit efforts DAN first recognized the need for scuba divers to have insurance to help cover the cost of treatment for scuba diving injuries. DAN fulfilled that need by developing diving’s first dive accident insurance program, still the industry leader 25 years later.
Diver Safety Resources
One of DAN’s best-known resources is the 24-hour DAN Emergency Hotline, which stands ready every hour of the day to help scuba divers in need. But DAN offers a number of non-emergency resources as well, including the DAN Information Line, medical FAQs, online seminars and video lectures, real-time webinars, articles, quizzes and more.
Divers Helping Divers
DAN has always been about the partnership between our organization and the scuba divers who support it. DAN Members enjoy great benefits, including TravelAssist, Alert Diver magazine, WorldCue® Planner and access to industry-leading insurance products. But the best benefit is being a part of and supporting the largest association of scuba divers dedicated to diving safety.
ReActivate
Haven’t been diving in a while or want to buff up on your dive skills? If so, then the ReActivate program is perfect for you. ReActivate will help you regain proficiency in all of the elementary scuba skills that you learned in your PADI Open Water course, enabling you to be a skilled and successful diver. This course consists of an E-Learning portion and an in-water (pool) skills session. It’s quick and easy, and a good way to prepare for your next PADI course or get ready for a diving vacation. Any PADI certified diver who wants a refresher or pre-travel update should ReActivate. Dive shops appreciate seeing a recent ReActivate date on your certification card because it means you’re ready to dive in.
Using ReActivate Touch (for tablets or mobile devices) or ReActivate Online (for your personal computer), you’ll immerse yourself in dive scenarios and make decisions that test your understanding of important dive safety concepts, dive planning essentials and problem management. Move through ReActivate at your own pace and delve deeper into topics when you need or want to.
In the water, we will help you regain comfort and confidence in scuba diving. You’ll practice a few safety-related skills and then go over anything you specifically want to review.
The beauty of Undersea Divers’ and the PADI ReActivate program is that each course is individualized to the student. We tailor the time spent in the water toward developing the skills with which you want the most practice. After completing the online portion of the course you will then discuss your current comfort level and your goals for your in-water ReActivate session with your instructor. Together you will decide the most effective way to spend your time in the water.
With summer just around the corner, there’s no better time to ReActivate your scuba certification, and it’s incredibly easy to get started. Call or stop by Undersea Divers to book your ReActivate experience today! We provide you with all of the gear you need at no additional charge, although we do recommend owning your own personal gear for comfort and safety. February News
Hello Divers!
Did January fly by fast for you too?! We can’t believe it’s already February! This month does bring us some extra fun though; Shaun and 22 divers are headed to Roatan for a weeks worth of fun in the sun. We will keep you updated with photos and videos from them!
Despite the colder temperatures, there are a handful of divers still diving off of Cape Ann! The water is sitting right around the high 30’s, low 40’s. Some divers are still going wet but adding an extra layer so don’t think it’s too cold for you wetsuit divers! There have been some rough seas and surge but the visibility hasn’t been too bad. People are seeing moon snails, shrimp and nudibranchs among some other critters.
We had a fun Photo Society meeting with images presented from Bonaire and Ambon Indonesia. This month we look forward to more member presentations. You can view details below for the event.
We would also like to announce that we have a new team member, James Allan. James is a PADI Instructor and was the Boston Sea Rovers intern in 2016. He is enthusiastic and excited for the 2017 dive season. We know you will love him as much as we do.
We have a few new items in the shop with out most exciting being the new Flip5 filters for the GoPro HERO5 made by Backscatter. You can read all about them below.
Make sure to mark your calendar for the Boston Sea Rovers show on March 11th & 12th. You can learn more about the show and purchase tickets below.
We hope to see you soon!
Happy Diving!

Diving Dry with DUI
This past summer I was lucky enough to be chosen as the Boston Sea Rovers Summer Intern. The Boston Sea Rovers is a large dive club based in the Greater Boston area and boasting a nationwide membership. Each year the club selects one young-adult from a pool of applicants to spend the summer exploring career opportunities in marine science under the guidance and hospitality of the club’s members. The summer is full of brief apprenticeships and adventures both domestic and international.
My summer was full of diving in different parts of the world. I was very fortunate to dive in two new locations: Newfoundland, Canada and (believe or not) the New England Coast. For this cold water diving, Diving Unlimited International (DUI) generously donated a custom-built TLS350 drysuit for my use. Previously deterred by these regions’ colder waters, I was now eager to dive in, armed with a top of the line exposure suit.
I thoroughly enjoyed my time underwater while staying warm in my DUI suit. A dry suit works by creating watertight seals at the wrists and neck, ensuring your body stays completely dry while only your hands and head are exposed. I wore thick, 7mm neoprene gloves and hood to keep these areas warm as well. Underneath the suit itself, I wore a special, moisture resistant, DUI sweatsuit. It felt as if I were diving in my pajamas! Despite water temperatures as cold as 44º F, I was plenty comfortable in my TLS350.
The other aspect of drysuit diving that differs from diving in a wetsuit is that your suit is connected to your air supply via a low pressure inflator hose (similar to your BCD). Given that a relatively large air space is created between your body and the suit, as you descend in the water column, your dry suit will ‘suck’ to your body. In order to compensate for this squeeze, drysuit divers inflate their suits slightly as they descend.
If you’re interested in learning to “dive-dry” check out Undersea Divers’ Dry Suit Dive course. Drysuit diving not only keeps you much warmer in colder environments such as New England, but allows you to extend your diving season into the colder months. The two day course will teach you everything you need to know about drysuit diving and incorporates academic, confined water, and open water sessions.
If you’re looking to buy a drysuit, I would highly recommend the DUI TLS350. This custom-built suit fits me perfectly and I can tell it was created with care by the DUI team. The seals are comfortable, I have full mobility underwater, and most importantly it keeps me incredibly warm. In fact, I often am warmer in my drysuit diving in 50º F water than I am diving in my wetsuit in the Caribbean! Check out their website for more information: http://www.dui-
We hope to see you around Undersea Divers soon!

Utila: A Diver’s Dream Destination
If you’re a certified diver looking for a new place to explore, a backpacker searching for the next extension of your journey, or even someone interested in becoming involved in the sport of scuba diving for the first time, I’ve got just the place to share with you: Utila!
Utila is one of three bay islands located off the northern coast of Honduras in the Western Caribbean. With one main road spanning the length of the island’s single town center, Utila is refreshingly small and consists primarily of dive shops, restaurants, and bars. This past fall, I spent three months in Utila earning my instructor certification, learning to operate the Utila Hyperbaric Chamber, and conducting research with the Whale Shark and Oceanic Research Center, or as islanders call it, WSORC. I thoroughly enjoyed my time in Utila, so much so that I plan on returning in early April to extend my work with WSORC.
I wasted no time diving into all that Utila has to offer, for the morning after my arrival I began my Instructor Development Course (or IDC) with the Bay Island College of Diving (BICD) and course director Nick Derutter. For fourteen days, I spent time in the classroom and in the water learning all the techniques and skills necessary to properly conduct a PADI course. I also received instructor-level training for PADI Emergency Oxygen Administration and Emergency First Responder Primary and Secondary Care. My IDC culminated with the Instructor Examination (or IE), which all candidates must successfully complete to be an official, teaching-status instructor. We celebrated my classmates and my success that night with a PADI-sponsored party, a large BICD dinner, and socializing at our favorite local bar, Tranquila. Becoming an instructor has certainly been the most rewarding step I have taken in my scuba diving career, which began nine years ago when I received my Junior Open Water certification.
Having completing my IDC and inspired by just how much I learned in two weeks, I yearned to get back into the classroom. One very unique feat Utila boasts is that the island has its own hyperbaric chamber operated by the Bay Island College of Diving. Thus, I enrolled in a Hyperbaric Chamber Operator course taught by instructor Pete Gilbert. Over the course of a week, I explored the physics and physiology behind hyperbaric medicine and learned how to safely operate a multiplace hyperbaric chamber.
I spent the remaining two months of my time in Utila with WSORC working as a Research Intern. Led by director Kate Meyer, the Whale Shark and Oceanic Research Center’s primary goal is to serve as a hub for graduate and thesis research while also offering educational internships. Through my internship, I gained an appreciation for the local Utilian ocean environment and learned how to be an advocate for it. Alongside studying local fish, corals, invertebrates, and benthic organisms, I also took part in beach clean-ups, monitored the local reefs’ health by conducting environmental surveys, and cared for corals under the guidance of Dan Hughes at WSORC’s coral nursery. Toward the end of my time, I also assisted two thesis candidates, Aislyn and Stephanie, conduct research and analyze data they had collected concerning the relationship between algae cover and fish populations on the north and south side of the Island. Their work was fascinating, and I was glad to be involved.
In addition to all of the unique opportunities Utila has to offer, the island’s harmonious population and easy going lifestyle makes it a truly enjoyable place to spend time. It was amazing getting to know all of the people with whom I worked at BICD and WSORC. Utila attracts a diverse crowd of individuals. I met people from different countries with zany accents and individuals with varying travel experience, interests, and scuba diving backgrounds. But one thing unites all of those who stumble upon Utila — a love for scuba diving and a passion for the ocean. At the end of the day, it’s nice to be able to sit back, watch an incredible Caribbean sunset, and enjoy the company of your island-mates.
I look forward to returning to Utila, and continuing to explore all that the island has to offer. It’s no coincidence that those who visit Utila often return or end up staying much longer than anticipated. There is no shortage of adventure in Utila.

Best Underwater Photos of 2016

This year may have been a rough one up here on Earth’s dry surface, but beneath the waves ocean life flourished and dazzled. The world’s most prestigious underwater photography competition has just announced its winning images for 2016—and they’re absolutely spellbinding.

The Ocean Art Photography competition has been ongoing for six years, and with each iteration, contestants seem to find new ways of capturing the alien beauty of life underwater. 2016 saw prizes handed out to 95 photographers from over 60 countries, in categories encompassing science (marine life behavior, reefscapes, and nudibranchs) and camera technology (wide angle, novice DSLR, and super-macro), not to mention the occasional highly-conceptual image of a dude repairing a beamer engine at the bottom of a pool.
