Bonaire Pictures: December 2016

Back in December we visited our favorite island, Bonaire. We had a great group of 10 people with us, all who have been to Bonaire before except for 2 new divers. The water was 83 degrees, visibility was around 80 feet and we had great weather other than one day of rain. We completed around 20 dives for the week with some people doing a few more than that. We were treated with some special critters such as seahorses and spotted eagle rays. Here are some photos to show you what critters you can see while diving and snorkeling in Bonaire. A huge thank you to Steve Setzer who captured all of these wonderful images. He is quite the talented photographer!

December Newsletter

Hello Divers!
We hope you had a happy and fun Thanksgiving! Last month kicked off our first warm water trip of the fall to an island in the SouthEast Caribbean, Dominica. The island is beautiful with lush green rainforests, waterfalls and rivers. We explored the Titou Gorge and Trafalger falls in the afternoons after diving. The waters were a warm 84 to 86 degrees. We saw the typical Caribbean marine life like banded coral shrimp,a ridiculous amount of  porcupine fish, spotted morays, turtles and giant sponges. We are planning on heading back to Dominica next fall so stay tuned for trip details.
This month we head back to one of our favorite islands, Bonaire. We are looking forward to the great meals, diving, warm waters and of course great company. If you haven’t booked a warm water dive vacation recently, we will be announcing our 2017 and 2018 line up of trips shortly.
For the month of December we have some great specials going on so make sure to check those out below. These specials will run through the month of December (but remember we close down from 12-24 through 1-1) so don’t miss out.
As most of you know, DEMA (Biggest Scuba TradeShow) was last month. This is the time of year when new products are released. We are excited to let you know we have picked up some new items (some in stock now, some hit the shelves in a month or two) such as BCDs, Masks, Knives, Wetsuits, Computers and Drysuits. We are always looking for the next best item to help you enhance your scuba diving lifestyle.
We hope everyone has a great holiday season!
Happy Diving!

New Pool Facility

As many of you may know, the pool we were using, the Paul Lydon Aquatic Center, suffered bad roof damage from a wind and rain storm at the end of October. The repairs will take awhile, so we have decided to hold our pool sessions at the Bennett Center at Gordon College in Wenham. We teach the PADI Open Water Diver course at the college so we are very familiar with the people and the facility. We are excited to start teaching our classes there on December 10th and know you will enjoy this pool!

We have made a list of the top stocking stuffers. Head over to our blog to read the full list.

New Gear! Introducing the Aqualung Soul & Pearl

Aqualung has introduced the Soul which is the same as the Soul i3 BCD they currently make but without the i3 inflator hose. This BCD is incredibly comfortable, taking all of the weight off of your shoulders and onto your hips. This BCD also holds the tank much tighter to your body for added comfort and maneuverability. The Soul is the woman’s version of the Axiom which is one of our best selling BCDs. We have these in stock so come on by to try one on! Learn More Here.

Aqualung’s Woman’s Pearl BCD has had a face-lift. They have taken away the sports bra feature. It is a wrap-around jacket style BC specifically designed for the female diver. Scuba Confidential: An Insiders Guide to Becoming a Better Diver

A customer of ours discovered this great book and we wanted to share it with all of you. We have recommended this book to many people and everyone loved it and said how helpful it really was.

Scuba Confidential is a unique book packed full of valuable tips and expert advice, giving you unprecedented access to the secrets of dive professionals and technical divers. With Scuba Confidential, you will learn how to master skills and techniques that will make you a more confident, capable and safe diver.

It offers an informed, balanced view on some of scuba diving’s most contentious issues like going solo, deep diving and rebreathers and includes a comprehensive analysis of how diving accidents happen and how to make sure you do not become a statistic.

Scuba Confidential also gives you valuable insights on a vast range of topics such as what it is like to do a cave diving course, how to make sure you buy the right equipment, what to consider when choosing an instructor, things even the pros get wrong and where to find the best diving in the world.

This is candid, no-nonsense practical advice from a professional who has been involved over the last three decades with virtually every aspect of the sport.

Have you ever wondered?

How to look as comfortable in the water as the professionals do?
What it is like to dive inside shipwrecks?
Which training courses are most worthwhile?
If you would make a good technical diver?
If you should be considering a rebreather?
How you can improve your diving skills?
How you can reduce your air consumption?
Why diving accidents happen and how to prevent them?
Whether you might sometimes actually be safer solo diving?
How to dive deep safely? Or
How muck diving can possibly be any fun?

Scuba Confidential has the answers to these questions and many more.

Scuba Skill: Finning Techniques

diver swims under water surface in air bubbles as in jacuzzi

Finning, like walking or running, is something we can all do. Propelling ourselves efficiently in the water is a key aspect of diving. However, much like running, that doesn’t mean that we all do it well or use the best techniques. See videos of finning techniques here.

New Products! Camera Gear, Lights & Fins!

We have another batch of new products for you. Check out the items below, if you have any questions on products never hesitate to get in touch with us.

ROAM Headlamp by Princeton Tech

Underwater Head Lamp

The original dive headlamp is back, brighter than ever! Decades ago, PTec introduced a diveable headlamp. Next, we shifted focus to brighter handheld lights. Eventually the chatter joined into one request too loud to ignore: “Bring back the SCUBA headlamp!” We began with our dive-proven platform, adding a 100 lumen LED module and custom optic that delivers the focused beam that divers need. Roam can be used as a standard headlamp, and our custom adapter allows mounting on many masks or any GoPro-style mount. Roam promises reliable, hands-free light, now brighter and more efficient.

We are happy to help you create a system that works for you.

GOBE Heads NightSea Head

One of the best features with the GOBE lights is that if you decide you want to switch from a 500 SPOT light to an 850 Wide, all you have to do is replace the head. You don’t need to buy the whole light itself which saves you money!

GOBE 500 Search Head
GOBE 700 Spot Head
GOBE NightSea Head: This light in particular is pretty interesting and change the way you night dive. For best results, view through a yellow filter to see nothing but fluorescence!

Learn more about your GOBE light options here.

GOBE (By Light & Motion) 856-0510_gobe700spot_1_1
Gobe’s robust factory sealed design is waterproof to 120 meters, works on land and can be mounted to anything.  The platform is built with six compatible lightheads, each optimized to deliver the perfect beam pattern for your activity. It comes in several different strengths. The thing we like about the GOBE the most is that you don’t have to buy a new light , they feature interchangeable heads so you can buy a 700 wide light then simple purchase the head for a 500 spot light and use the same handle. These lights are also rechargeable, so no dealing with dead batteries. It also features smart indicators to let you know your battery life left as well as the power intensity of the light. You can mount the GOBE on pretty much anything.

  • 700 Wide (60 degree flood beam for lighting up a wide area)
    • Best light for video**
  • 700 Spot (20 degree spot beam is perfect for general use)
  • 500 Spot (20 degree spot beam is also great for general use)
  • NightSea (20 degree blue flood beam to create a fluorescent glow that must be accompanied by the NightSea filter)
  • Search (8 degree spot beam)
  • Focus (60 degree red flood beam)

SOLA (By Light & Motion) sola2000
The SOLA lights are patented with dual beam systems, and powerful, precise beam patterns. The light is the same as the GOBE when it comes to being rechargeable and adaptive to mount to anything. There are many models that can be used just a dive light, we recommend looking at the SOLA imaging lights. Here are a few of our favorites.

We highly recommend the filter systems made by Backscatter for the best imaging possible. GoPro does offer filters of their own but we feel the quality is better with the Backscatter models. You can either get the Flip 3.1 or the Flip 3.1 combo pack that includes the mounting system and filters. You can also buy additional filters individually.

Flip 3.1
This includes the side mount with the dive filter which is good for 20-50ft range. ($75)

flip 3.1

Flip 3.1 Combo Pack
This includes the side mount and top mount and the shallow, dive and deep filters. ($135) This means you can interchange between 2 filters for diving at various depths.

combo pack

Green Water Filter
Although the green water filter does not come in a pack with the mounts, you can purchase it separately for $20. The green water filter is PERFECT for diving in New England waters.

backscatter green water filter

Macromate Mini Lens
Backscatter even has a macro lens for the GoPro for razor sharp upclose imaging. This will mount on the normal side or top mount. You will need to get the 55mm thread adaptor for mounting which retails for $20.

Shallow Filter: This filter is ideal for 5 to 20ft. ($20)

Dive Filter: This filter is ideal for 20-50ft. ($20)

Deep Filter: This filter is ideal for 50 ft and below. ($20)

The easiest and most inexpensive way to edit your GoPro images and videos is to use GoPro’s  GoPro Studio which can be downloaded for free here. You can import all of your images and videos, create movies with text and music. You can pull still images from your videos and so much  more. It is an easy program that is user friendly.

If you have any questions regarding how to use your GoPro or if you have questions on lighting, filters, etc, please come down to the store. We would be happy to help you create the best images and videos possible. We sell all of the above items.
